Family Health Check: What to Watch for as Kids Head Into Summer

- 2 min read

As the school year wraps up and families start shifting into summer mode, it’s a great time to pause and do a quick health check for your kids.
Transitions, like the end of school, can bring changes in routine, sleep, activity, and even mood. A little proactive attention now can help set your family up for a healthy, active summer.
Here are a few key things we encourage parents to keep an eye on:
Physicals and Forms
Summer activities and sports often require physicals. Getting these scheduled early helps avoid last-minute stress.
Sleep Changes
Later nights and flexible schedules are part of summe - but big shifts in sleep can impact mood, growth, and overall health.
Mental and Emotional Well-Being
Some kids thrive in summer’s freedom, while others miss routine and social structure. Watch for changes in mood, withdrawal, or increased anxiety.
Nutrition and Hydration
Without school routines, eating habits can shift. Try to keep balanced meals and regular hydration part of the day.
Screen Time Balance
More free time can mean more screens. Setting some simple boundaries early can make a big difference.
Lingering Health Concerns
If your child had ongoing issues during the school year -frequent illness, headaches, stomachaches, or difficulty focusing - summer is a great time to follow up.
One of the benefits of our Direct Primary Care model is that we can take the time to really talk through these concerns—without feeling rushed. Whether it’s a sports physical, a quick question, or something that’s been on your mind for a while, we’re here to support your family.
A little attention now can go a long way toward a happy, healthy summer ahead.
