A Deeper Dive Into Bloodwork and What it Tells You

Have you ever looked at your lab results and wondered what all those numbers mean? You're not alone!
Bloodwork is one of the most useful tools healthcare providers have to understand what's happening inside your body and many blood tests are included in your membership at RMFP. No need to go to the lab!
Your blood results can help identify potential health concerns, monitor existing conditions and provide a baseline for tracking changes over time.
Here are a few common blood tests you may encounter:
Complete Blood Count (CBC)
A CBC looks at different types of blood cells, including red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. It can help identify anemia, signs of infection and other blood-related conditions.
Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP)
This test provides information about blood sugar, electrolytes, proteins, and kidney and liver function. It offers a broad look at how several important systems in your body are working.
Lipid Panel (Cholesterol)
This test measures cholesterol and triglycerides. It helps evaluate your risk for cardiovascular disease and can guide conversations about nutrition, exercise and other ways to protect your heart.
Hemoglobin A1C
As Abbey discusses in her article this month, A1C measures average blood sugar over approximately three months. It is commonly used to screen for and monitor diabetes.
Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone (TSH)
This test helps evaluate thyroid function. Your thyroid plays an important role in regulating metabolism, energy and many other body functions.
A Few Things to Know:
Fasting isn't always necessary. Some tests require fasting, while others don't. Always follow the instructions provided by your healthcare team.
One number doesn't tell the whole story. Your provider considers your symptoms, medical history, medications and previous results when interpreting your labs.
Normal ranges can vary. A result slightly outside the reference range doesn't automatically mean something is wrong.
Trends matter. Comparing your current results with previous bloodwork can help identify changes that may be important.
At Rocky Mountain Family Practice, we believe healthcare should be personal and understandable. If you have questions about your lab results, don't hesitate to ask. Understanding your health is an important part of taking charge of it.
Your health is worth knowing a little more about!
